It was a mission.
Newsom's daughter Crystal McCormick urged her father to start the dove release business because of his passion for birds. Shortly before the business opened, McCormick, 21, died from complications of Graves' disease. Newsom found himself trying to deal with his new business, while mourning his daughter's passing.
A month after a friend released doves at McCormick's funeral, one of the birds released returned and flew in with Newsom's birds in his coop.
"That was a miracle," Newsom said. "Maybe everyone might not see it as that, but I did."
Newsom was allowed to keep the bird which they named Angel. Angel has since passed as well.
"For about a year after Crystal passed, Jeff was in a void," said Sam Scilia, friend and pastor of Jeff's church, Beacon Ministries Worship Center, 500 E. McDevitt Ave. "But Jeff now has a great duty to people, he brings peace to them with his birds."
Crystal Wings and Amber Dreams releases doves for funerals, weddings, grand openings, and pretty much anything else. Newsom thinks of his business as a ministry and donates much of his time and resources to charitable events. Free releases are also given for military, law enforcement and emergency personnel as well as children.
